Services at St Mary's

Services and other events this month

Regular Worship Pattern     Music      ► Children & Young People's Groups

Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals

Services at St Mary's draw on traditional and contemporary sources, reflecting

the diversity of  the people who worship here, and their differing ages, needs

and preferences.  Music, colour, language, movement and symbolism all play

an important part in our worship, as we use all our senses to respond to God.

Our usual Sunday service pattern is as follows:

8.00am        Holy Communion                  (Book of Common Prayer)

10.00am      Sung Eucharist                     (Common Worship Order 1)

with Creche, Sunday School & Gospel Group

6.30pm        Evensong                               (Book of Common Prayer)

All-Age Eucharists

take place at 10am on the first Sunday of them month

Taize Services

are held at 6.30pm on the second Sunday of the month

'Alternative' Services

are held approximately three times a year,

usually at 6.30pm and with a seasonal focus (e.g. Advent, Lent)

Prayers for Healing and Wholeness

are available at the 10am Eucharist

every other month - follow the link here for details.

Midweek Services

The Eucharist is celebrated on Wednesdays at 10am and Thursdays at 7.30pm

and also on Saints' Days and Major Festivals - see the Church Hill Herald for full

details of this month's services

Incense

is used at various times in the year, usually to mark a festival

or other special occasion.

Music at St Mary's

St Mary's Choir was reformed in September 2006 after a nine month break to

take stock of our musical needs in worship.  The choir is now focused on

Sunday Evensong, but occasionally sings for morning and midweek services.

Our hymn books are Hymns Old & New (10am)

and New English Hymnal (6.30pm)

A small team of Cantors lead the singing at the 10am Sung Eucharist,

and in addition to the hymns, the congregational musical setting includes

the Gloria (Kyries in Lent and Advent), a Responsorial Psalm,  the Gospel

Acclamation, the Eucharistic Prayer, and the Agnus Dei.

Once or twice a year we are pleased to welcome visiting choirs who usually

sing a full mass setting to mark a particular festival.

The Service of Evensong was created for the Book of Common Prayer by

Thomas Cranmer.  He drew on the sevenfold monastic cycle of prayer, and

combined the two offices of Vespers and Compline (which is why the service

includes the Lord's Prayer twice!)  Evensong has been the backbone of

Anglican worship for centuries, and continues to play an important part in

worship at St Mary's - not least for the choir, who take an active and important

role in leading the music.

The choir is always on the look out for new members - please contact the

Parish Office for more information.

Children's & Young People's Groups

The Crèche (0-3 years) operates in the vestry during the 10am Service,

and provides parents with small children with a much needed  'bolt-hole'.

The service is relayed to the vestry through the sound system so that parents

and children can still feel part of what is going on in church.

Sunday School (3-7 years) meets in Church Hill School (opposite St Mary's)

from 10am, and the children are brought into Church in time to receive a

blessing at Communion.

Gospel Group (8-16 years) meets in Church for the first part of the Service,

and then moves to Church Hill School until Communion.  What ever the topic,

somehow food is always involved!

Sunday School and Gospel Group use the Roots teaching material.

NB: All who are involved in our work with children and young people are subject to a three

yearly CRB Enhanced Disclosure check
